In a separate bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
In a large mixing bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth.
Pour in the melted butter to the mashed bananas and mix well.
Add the egg and whisk until combined.
Stir in the vanilla extract.
Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.
Fold in the semisweet chocolate chips.
Divide the batter evenly among the paper-lined muffin cups.
Top each muffin with a banana slice and sprinkle a few extra chocolate chips over the tops, if desired.
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the muffins cool in the pan for 5 minutes or Transfer the muffins to a wire rack to cool completely.
